Darebin United’s player development pathway provides one connected framework for every player, regardless of team or starting point. Through three age-appropriate phases—Build (U11 and under), Develop (U12–U15) and Perform (U16 and above)—we develop complete footballers, strengthen tactical understanding and positional responsibility, and support consistent performance. Individual growth takes place within the team, with enjoyment, challenge, belonging and strong football habits at every stage.

Darebin United provides one connected development framework for every player, regardless of team or starting point. Our approach is age-appropriate and player-centred: build the complete footballer, develop tactical understanding and positional responsibility, then support consistent performance. Individual growth happens within the team, with enjoyment, challenge, belonging and strong football habits present at every stage.
BUILD — U11 & UNDER Foundation phase |
| Player focus | Develop the complete footballer without locking players into specific positions. Priorities include ball mastery, receiving, passing, dribbling, finishing, decision-making, understanding space, confidence and learning the game. |
| Coaching approach | Plenty of touches, small-sided games, guided discovery and opportunities to experience different positions. Enjoyment and curiosity create the foundation for long-term development. |
DEVELOP — U12–U15 Development phase |
| Player focus | Build on the technical foundation while developing game awareness, tactical understanding and responsibility within the team. Players begin specialising in one or two positions without losing adaptability or individual skill. |
| Coaching approach | Game-realistic sessions connect individual technique with positional detail, team principles and decision-making under pressure. Clear feedback and individual goals help each player take greater ownership of their progress. |
PERFORM — U16 & ABOVE Performance phase |
| Player focus | Apply established technical and tactical foundations consistently in defined roles. Match preparation, resilience, adaptability, physical readiness and accountability become increasingly important alongside team performance and results. |
| Coaching approach | Position-specific detail, tactical flexibility, objective feedback and higher-intensity training prepare players for U18, U23, Metropolitan and State League opportunities. |
Age groups provide the structure for delivery, but development is not a race and no two players progress in exactly the same way. Coaches consider technical, tactical, physical, psychological and social development when setting challenges and discussing the next appropriate step. Selection and team placement are informed by current readiness, future potential, squad balance and the environment in which the player is most likely to thrive.
